AGM battery have the advantage of low-cost, large discharge current, but there are narrow operating temperature range, battery the easy dehydration and thermal runaway defects; while the gel battery costs are high, but it has a stable performance, wide operating temperature range, resistance to charging over-discharge, long life and other advantages.
In most cases belong to the high-current electric car batteries, deep cycle discharge batteries for electric bikes more suitable selection of gel batteries. Gel battery has a strong resistance to over-discharge ability and strong electro-hydraulic retention ability, avoid over discharge the battery and cause thermal runaway due to cell dehydration produce.
Charging characteristics of the various brands of lead-acid batteries are basically the same, but because the manufacturers of battery material formulations, electrolyte concentration and content are different, there are some differences in the charging voltage, therefore, strictly speaking, should be based on each battery manufacturing plant given specific requirements to determine the program charging voltage of the battery, otherwise easily lead to the improper use of the battery.
Electric bicycle motor output power to match the power rating of the battery, so in order to extend the service life of the battery, electric bicycle motor power to try to be less than the rated power of the battery to avoid battery full load or overload conditions for a long time .
In the purchase of a product signs are complete, including the manufacturer’s name, product specifications, date of manufacture, trade marks; view are the same inside and outside signs, in particular, to check whether the product is eye-catching logo, production date to pay attention to whether in the near future.
Second, we must pay attention to the appearance of the battery. View product deformation, cracks, scratches and leakage traces. Battery terminals should be clean, no rust, the flag should be clear.
Third, is concerned about the rated capacity of the electric vehicle battery product labeling. Greater the rated capacity of the battery label, the longer the battery discharge time, it is best not to buy battery rated label, but to pay attention to whether the batteries for electric vehicles, are subject to more than one capacity label, should be subject to the rated capacity.

two kinds of lead acid batteries from LEOCH
There are two kinds of lead acid batteries from LEOCH, which is a famous public company in Hongkong, China.
1. AGM technology battery
Poor liquid battery is drawn to the ultra-fine glass wool partitions (AGM) electrolyte, there is no free electrolyte in the battery. AGM separator has a porosity of more than 93 percent, which precipitated the O2 of about 10% of the pore as positive to negative recombination channel in order to achieve the oxygen cycle, the anode gas recombination battery to seal.
Poor liquid AGM battery has self-discharge, high charge efficiency and affordable.
2. Gel battery
The gel batteries adopt thixotropic fumed silica gel absorb the electrolyte, so that electrolyte colloidal early can not form a large number of micro-cracks, the low recombination efficiency of the oxygen, so the safety valve opens frequently, gases (oxygen and hydrogen) escape. With the continued use of the battery, micro-cracks increase the recombination rate of oxygen to reach the normal state.
The gel battery has good deep discharge recovery performance, higher temperatures and longer service life characteristics.

How to revive a dead gel battery
I ever wrote a post to fix a dead golf cart batteries with two ways. One is to apply an equalizing charge, and the other is to drain and fill the water from he case. If these ways are useful, we have no need to throw our “dead” battery away. But can we use the same way to revive a dead gel battery?
The answer is of course “no”. The VRLA gel battery that is sealed is different from golf cart batteries. We can’t drain away the acid solution because they are gel electrolyte. So how should we do if we find the battery is dead? I just share my experience with you, but it might be not that professional.
I put a gel charger on it for about 12 hrs, got a glow from the dash. Then I put a 6 amp charger on it for another 12 hrs, lit up brightly. Attempt to start it with the charger attached. It fired right up. Then I turned it off, removed the charger, started right up again. So I put the gel charger back on it, and in about 6 hrs, the green light on the charger glows steady, showing a full charge.
If your gel battery goes flat prematurely, use this one I have told you above to try fixing it. It’s worth to have a try.
what keeps gel battery on the market?
Gel battery is classified as one type of VRLA battery (The other type is VRLA AGM batteries). It has the same construction as AGM VRLA battery but has different electrolyte. The gel electrolyte is sulfuric acid combined with silica. These gel batteries use the extra microporous separator which can: reduce the depolarization of the negative electrode and avoid the PCL 3 effect (premature capacity loss due to negative plate sulphation); scientifically decreases thermal runaway; during deep discharge or pole reversal, help to prevent short circuits by dendrite growth between the plates.
Gel batteries have a few strong advantages that keep them on the market. They don’t typically leak, or produce spills or corrosion. Even if they are cut open, the gel does not flow out of the battery. The batteries are not known to evaporate, which is a constant issue with traditional wet batteries. They have a better resistance to extreme temperature changes, and are more vibration-resistant and shock-resistant than other types of batteries. Besides, these batteries can be left discharged for some time and they will still be able to recover to full capacity. They also do not develop a memory that limits the capacity of their recharging.

A way to charge the AGM GEL battery – float charging
We always use the normal charger to charge a gel battery because if not, we will damage it. Of course, sometimes you might use the lead acid battery charger for the gel battery because you know how to set the charger for a suitable charging. There is two ways to charge the AGM gel battery, which is fast charging and float charging. Here I just tell you one way – float charging.
1. Place the battery on the gel cell battery charger per the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
2. Turn on the charger, and charge the battery at a constant voltage of 2.25 to 2.30 volts per cell (13.5 to 13.8 volts on a 12-volt battery at 58 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius). At this voltage, the battery should regulate its own level of current.
3. Stop charging the battery when it is fully charged, and remove it from the gel cell battery charger.
You can charge the gel battery properly if you adopt float charging that is good for the battery. As we all know, over charge or deeply discharge all can affect the performance of any lead acid battery, so pay attention to here when you charge a AGM gel battery. If you are more interested in all kinds of batteries, please let me know and I will try my best to write more here to share with you.

What’s the structure of gel battery?
Talking about gel battery, I will think of VRLA battery, because the former is part of the later. They use the same structure but different electrolyte. Gel battery is filled with a gel substance, referred to as a gel electrolyte that replaces that some of us know as battery acid. The gel electrolyte is sulfuric acid combined with silica. The gel is immobile, like gelatin. Traditional batteries, however, are liquid or wet-cell batteries. Gel batteries contain a valve regulating system. This system allows gas to be released or expelled when needed. Along with the gas being expelled, the gel substance contains calcium, instead of the antimony that is found in traditional batteries. The calcium keeps the gel from gassing in the same way a traditional battery might.
Here I will take the gel battery from LEOCH Battery for example to discuss the structure. Leoch VRLA Gel batteries are based on true gel technology which has more than half century experience. This type of batteries has gel electrolyte usually produced by the homogeneous distributed silicon dioxide in a diluted sulfuric acid named as gel SOL with thixotropic properties. The special designed vent valves are also used to control the gassing and water losing rate.

Those gel batteries don’t typically leak, or produce spills or corrosion. Even if they are cut open, the gel does not flow out of the battery. They have a better resistance to extreme temperature changes, and are more vibration-resistant and shock-resistant than other types of batteries. Besides, these batteries can be left discharged for some time and they will still be able to recover to full capacity. They also do not develop a memory that limits the capacity of their recharging. So the gel battery is very durable and used for a long time.
Maybe you will think I am not professional, and my thought might be wrong. It doesn’t matter. You can know more about the VRLA gel battery from other articles, then it will prove I am right.
